The Case Research Journal is published by the North American Case Research Association. The CRJ is the leading academic journal for cases in business and related disciplines in North America. The Case Research Journal publishes outstanding field-research-based, decision focused teaching cases drawn from research in real organizations, dealing with issues in all administration-related disciplines. Occasionally, the Journal publishes papers concerning case research, case writing or case teaching. All manuscripts are double-blind refereed by Editorial Board members and ad hoc reviewers in the appropriate discipline. The journal publishes four issues a year and has an acceptance rate of approximately 20 percent. In addition to appearing in a print version of the journal, cases published in the CRJ are distributed online through our publishing partners, including Harvard Business School Press, Ivey, The Case Centre and McGraw-Hill, among others.
CRJ REPUTATION
We are often asked about how the Case Research Journal is ranked. Journal rankings are typically based on citations of articles, which do not apply to teaching cases. As such, the CRJ does not appear on most journal ranking lists. These rankings are a proxy for the impact of the articles. For cases, we can assess impact from the distribution reach of the journal and the adoption of cases for classroom use. To our knowledge, the CRJ has the broadest distribution of any peer-reviewed case journal. Our cases are distributed through Harvard Business School Press, Ivey Publishing, The Case Centre, Pearson Collections, McGraw Hill Create, StudyNet, and CCMP. Annually, there are over 50,000 adoptions of CRJ cases through our distribution partners. NACRA members who have published cases in the CRJ are provided with information about the number of adoptions of their specific cases along with their annual royalty statements.
An article in a recent issue of the Academy of Management’s Learning and Education Journal (AMLE) does provide rankings of journals with the content domain of management education based on reputation with active scholars. The Case Research Journal was ranked #10, with a “B+” rating in that article. None of the nine journals ranked above the CRJ are case journals, and other case journals on the list were ranked lower. Further, several of the journals ranked below the CRJ on this list are ranked as “A” journals elsewhere, including on the ABDC journal list. We therefore see this article as objective support for our perception of the CRJ as the premier case journal. We believe that the stature of our Editorial Team is a good reflection of the quality and stature of the journal. Our Editorial Board is composed of outstanding case researchers from some of the top institutions around the globe. Additional factors contributing to our journal’s outstanding reputation include its longevity (published since 1980) and rigorous double blind peer review process of both cases and instructor’s manuals (≈20% acceptance rate). The CRJ is listed in Cabell’s Directory for multiple disciplines. Its ISSN number is 2328-5095.
